Greninja Gold Star pop report: one in nineteen, and the math still clears

56,219 copies of one Elite Trainer Box promo have passed through PSA's grading room. 3,015 came back Gem Mint 10. That ratio is 5.4 percent as of the August 13, 2026 pull, and among promos carrying a census this size exactly one has ever graded worse, a giveaway handed out in cinema lobbies in 2000. Bad odds are usually the reason people stop submitting a card. Here they are the reason they keep going.

Inside the Greninja Gold Star pop report

Greninja Gold Star, card SWSH144 in the SWSH Black Star Promo series, English print, handed out inside the 2021 Celebrations Elite Trainer Box. PSA has graded 56,219 of them and returned 3,015 tens. 21,907 came back 9. 22,011 came back 8, and those two columns are close enough to call a tie, which is the first strange thing about this census. On most modern cards the 9 column towers over the 8.

Below that sits the part nobody screenshots. 9,283 copies landed at 7 or lower, plus 3 that came back Authentic with no grade attached. Add the 8s and better than half of everything ever submitted returned an 8 or worse.

Submitters remain undeterred. 1,973 fresh grades arrived last period against a 30 day trend of -14%, which at this gem rate buys roughly a hundred new tens. Five years after release, a card with terrible odds still draws thousands of entries a month.

Its own set behaves nothing like it. The Classic Collection Charizard reprint from the same 25th anniversary lineup gems at 59.25 percent on the same pull, better than eleven times as often.

Why a card that never got handled grades like this

Start by removing the usual suspect. Bulbapedia's release notes put this Greninja in the Celebrations Elite Trainer Box and the Celebrations Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box from October 8, 2021, sealed in its own promo pack inside a sealed box. Nobody shuffled it. Nobody carried it through the two decades its frame pretends to. Scroll the recent sold listings and a large share still say SEALED in the title, because the pack is how the card normally trades.

So the damage arrived with the card.

The likeliest mechanism is sitting on the card face. This is an EX Series layout, revived for the anniversary, and that layout runs holofoil across the entire card rather than confining it to the illustration window. Pull up the scan and the foil is everywhere: behind the Poke POWER text, behind Mist Slash, down the dotted strip on the left edge, under the frame. A normal holo rare gives a press mark somewhere dull to land, since its text box is flat cardstock. This card gives it none, and PSA scores surface defects wherever they show.

Read that as the best available explanation rather than a settled one. No press data is published, and a full foil face does not by itself prove where a given 8 came from. What the census does establish on its own is that whatever caps this card is doing it to a card that arrived factory fresh, and doing it to more than half of them.

The comparison that makes the point is the Van Gogh museum Pikachu. That promo also travels sealed from distribution straight into submission boxes, and almost its entire census sits at 9 or 10. Sealed packaging protects a card from collectors. It does not protect a card from the press that made it.

Twenty six times, in one grade point

PriceCharting had the PSA 9 at $68.57 and the PSA 10 at $1,775 when both were read on August 23, 2026. That is a factor of nearly twenty six across a single grade point, and it is the number that explains every submission in the paragraphs above.

Wide gaps like that are rare even among cards famous for them. Among the twenty one cards in the dataset with 40,000 or more grades and a full set of PriceCharting figures, only two open wider: the Celebrations Pikachu at roughly forty four times and the shadowless Base Set Charizard at thirty two. Both of those are cards where the 9 has effectively no market. This Greninja has the same shape.

The climb underneath it is real and recent. That PSA 10 figure read $663.35 in August 2025 and $1,775 in August 2026, up 168 percent across twelve months. It also peaked at $2,150 in May 2026, so the current number sits about 17 percent below the high. Whether the run was demand or somebody working a thin market is not something the sold tape can settle.

Fukuda's shiny, and the star it borrows from

The illustration is Masakazu Fukuda's, credited on the card face, and the Greninja in it is the shiny one, rendered in black and red against a burst of gold. That choice is inherited. Gold Star cards in the mid 2000s EX Series were built around alternate coloration, and this promo revives the convention along with the frame.

Bulbapedia notes it as the first Pokemon Star card since POP Series 5, and the card carries a Poke POWER called Shadow Knife rather than a modern Ability, which is a deliberate period detail rather than an error. It runs 130 HP as a Darkness type with one attack, Mist Slash at 100 damage. The small print at the bottom says it cannot be used in official tournaments, and the reminder box limits a deck to one Pokemon Star. A card built to look like 2005 and to be legal in nothing.

One in nineteen, against eighty dollars

PSA's Value tier was still paused when their services page was read on August 23, 2026, so Regular at $79.99 is the entry point, insured to $1,500 and quoted at 70 to 80 business days. Note the mismatch buried in that line: the outcome you are paying for is worth more than the tier will insure.

Everything turns on how often that top row happens. Run the whole census through August 2026 prices rather than the dream outcome, dock 15 percent for eBay fees and shipping a slab, and an average submission returns about $120 against $107 spent. This card needs roughly a 4.5 percent gem rate to break even. It runs 5.4 percent.

An edge under one point of gem rate is not a business. It is, however, positive, which is unusual for a census this brutal and is the honest answer to why 56,219 copies have been submitted. The 9 is what makes it uncomfortable: at $71 against roughly $107 laid out, every miss costs about $36, and the misses number 21,907 at that grade alone.

Then there is the calendar. Seventy to eighty business days is close to four months of holding a card you have already paid for, on a PSA 10 that has given back 17 percent since May 2026. Paying August money for a winter sale is part of the trade, not a footnote to it.

The copy in front of you

Check the bottom half before the artwork. The Poke POWER box and the attack box sit on foil here, which is exactly where this card gives up its 9, so run a fingernail's width of light across the text and watch for a ridge riding the surface. Measure the yellow border after that, since it is narrow enough to report a small drift in the cut.

An unopened promo pack is a different question entirely. Packs trade at their own premium and tearing one spends that premium to buy a 5.4 percent lottery ticket, which is a trade the census does not recommend.
