How many PSA 10 Base Set Charizards are there? 488, as of the August 13, 2026 population pull, out of 104,121 graded attempts. That is the unlimited print, the one your childhood binder actually held, and its 0.47 percent gem rate is the number every other Charizard statistic orbits.

A hundred thousand verdicts

104,121 graded. 488 tens, 8,541 nines, 16,252 eights, 788 Authentic, and everything else, roughly three quarters of all submissions, at PSA 7 or lower. PSA added 1,649 unlimited Charizard grades in the last reporting period. Twenty seven years after the wrapper came off, the hobby is still feeding this row.

Wizards reported 400,000 packs sold within six weeks of the January 9, 1999 launch, and unlimited kept printing through Pokemania. Supply was never the constraint. Condition is. These cards went to playgrounds, and the census is the receipt.

Why do so few gem?

Start with what PSA demands: centering inside roughly 55/45 on the front, four sharp corners, full original gloss. Then look at what 1999 WotC production delivered, an account assembled from years of collector forensics rather than any factory record: sheet cuts that missed the window before a kid ever touched the card, print lines through the cosmos holofoil, and factory scratches already present under the shrink wrap. A copy that survived childhood still has to have survived the factory.

Here is the inversion that surprises people: the unlimited print gems at 0.47 percent, while the 1st Edition gems at roughly four times that rate, and the Shadowless print does worst of all. Rarity at the top grade was manufactured on playgrounds, not printing presses.

What is the grading math?

The unlimited ladder is steep and honest: raw copies trade in the hundreds, a PSA 9 clears three thousand, and the 10 lives near thirty thousand, with the 1st Edition sibling's headlines ($420,000 at PWCC in March 2022, $550,000 at Heritage on December 12, 2025) pulling the whole family upward. The fee line is Regular, because the realistic outcome for a typical raw copy is a 7 or an 8, and an honest declared value fits the $1,500 cap. If you truly believe you are holding a 9, declare like it.

One census footnote worth knowing: in March 2021, PSA suspended its cheap tiers entirely after receiving more cards in three days than in the prior three months, per president Steve Sloan's letter. A meaningful slice of this card's 104,121 grades arrived in exactly that flood.

Grade for the 8, be thrilled by the 9, and treat the 10 as something that happens to other people, 488 of them in history.
